A wholesale data centre is a relatively large data centre where the provider only leases large blocks of space and power, typically defined private suites or large cages, to its customers. It does not involve leasing small amounts of space or leasing space to 'colocation retailers'. Very often, large enterprises choose to lease wholesale data centres instead of building their own data centre.
While there is no industry or market standard for what power and associated space capacity constitutes a wholesale data centre, most minimum power commitments range from 40 kilowatts to more than one (1) Megawatt depending on the data centre design and end user demand.
